WHAT ARE ASHWAGANDHA AND HOLY BASIL?

Stress is ubiquitous and its prevalence is increasing worldwide. It is a major risk factor in the development of physical and psychiatric conditions. It negatively affects cognitive ability, memory, sleep quality, executive functions, and the overall psychological well-being of individuals. Ashwagandha, or withania somnifera dunal, commonly known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry, has traditionally been used as an adaptogen.

The main chemical constituents of pharmacological importance in the ashwagandha plant are the withanolides.

Holy basil, or tulsi, is an aromatic plant native to Southeast Asia with adaptogenic properties. Its beneficial effects derive from its numerous bioactive components, such as eugenol, carvacrol, ursolic acid, β-caryophyllene and rosmarinic acid (3)3. Thakur S et al. WHY THIS FORMAT?

A dosage of 600mg per day of the dry extract of Ashwagandha KSM-66® with 5% withanolides has been shown to reduce cortisol, thus improving symptoms associated with stress and anxiety (4)4. Similarly, supplementation with holy basil extract – Holixer® at doses greater than 125mg/day has proven to reduce objective and subjective stress markers (5)5. Lopresti AL et al. BENEFITS OF ASHWAGANDHA AND HOLY BASIL

To date, scientific research has proven that Ashwagandha extract supplementation (6)6. Majeed M et al. A standardized Ashwagandha root extract alleviates stress, anxiety, and improves quality of life in healthy adults by modulating stress hormones: Results from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Medicine (Baltimore). 2023 Oct 13;102(41):e35521. reduces cortisol levels and increases serotonin production, thus reducing stress and anxiety levels.
