WHAT IS OMEGA-3 AND FISH OIL?

Fish oil is the most effective way to increase omega-3 (ω3) levels thanks to its high concentration of EPA and DHA (1)1. Harris WS. Omega-3 fatty acids. In: Coates PM, Betz JM, Blackman MR, et al., eds. Encyclopedia of Dietary Supplements. 2nd ed. London and New York: Informa Healthcare; 2010:577-86.

The three main ω3 fatty acids are ALA, EPA and DHA. ALA is an essential fatty acid that your body can convert into EPA and DHA, but only in very small amounts. Therefore, the intake of EPA and DHA supplements is the most effective strategy to increase ω3 levels.

Essential fatty acids cannot be synthesized by our body, so it is necessary to provide them through the diet. An adequate intake of these fatty acids offers health and performance benefits.

The ω3 fatty acids are important components of our body’s cell membranes. In addition, DHA levels are especially high in the retina (eye), brain, and sperm. Omega-3 provides energy to the body and affects the heart, blood vessels, lungs, immune system, and endocrine functions.

We must keep in mind that it is not only the ω3 intake that matters, but also the ω6:ω3 ratio. The Modern diet is deficient in ω3 and excessive in ω6, mainly due to the consumption of ultra-processed foods (2)2. Simopoulos AP. The importance of the omega-6/omega-3 fatty acid ratio in cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases. Exp Biol Med (Maywood). 2008 Jun;233(6):674-88.. By increasing the concentrations of EPA and DHA we reduce this ratio, thus favoring anti-inflammation.

WHY THIS FORMAT?

Fish oil provides omega-3 in the form of natural triglycerides, which is the natural form of lipids in the diet, thus achieving greater absorption capacity and bioavailability.

This product also has IFOS certification, guaranteeing its quality and ensuring omega-3 content in accordance to the labeling. Among other parameters, this certification also guarantees compliance with heavy metal and oxidation standards.

The addition of highly antioxidant vitamin E protects the product from oxidation, which can affect the quality of the fish oil.

The use of softgel capsules allows the fish oil to be dissolved and released in the segment of the intestine where it is most effectively absorbed.

600mg of omega-3 per capsule allows for optimal dosage no matter what the application.

HOW TO USE OMEGA-3?

Based on current scientific evidence, our nutrition team has designed the following recommendations (3)3. AIS Sports Supplement Framework Fish Oil (Omega-3 Fatty Acids – EPA and DHA). Australian Institute of Sport. 2021.:

Take 2 capsules/day:
   Performance Objective:
      – During periods with high training loads.
      – During periods with high competition density.
      – During injury recovery.
   Health Objective:
      – Those people who do not consume oily fish.

Take 1 capsule/day:
   Health Objective:
      – Those who consume oily fish on an irregular basis.

BENEFITS OF FISH OIL SUPPLEMENTATION

According to recent scientific evidence (44. G.E. Peoples et al. Chapter 10 – Fish Oil for Physical Performance in Athletes, Editor(s): Susan K. Raatz, Douglas M. Bibus, Fish and Fish Oil in Health and Disease Prevention, Academic Press, 2016, Pages 119-136.,55. McGlory C et al. The Influence of Omega-3 Fatty Acids on Skeletal Muscle Protein Turnover in Health, Disuse, and Disease. Front Nutr. 2019 Sep 6;6:144.,66. Djuricic I et al. Beneficial Outcomes of Omega-6 and Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids on Human Health: An Update for 2021. Nutrients. 2021 Jul 15;13(7):2421.), an increase in omega-3 plasma concentrations offers important health benefits:

   – Improved anti-inflammatory functions.
   – Muscle, heart, and brain membrane optimization.
   – Preservation of muscle mass during periods of injury.
   – Reduced incidence of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease.
   – Supports general well-being.
