WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF MAGNESIUM?

Magnesium is a crucial mineral for the proper functioning of our body. Despite this, a large part of the population has a magnesium intake below the recommended level. Reports indicate that 35-50% of the population in Western countries have insufficient magnesium intake. As 80% of this mineral is lost during food processing, modern diets are comprised of foods with low levels of magnesium.

In addition, decades of strong chemical fertilization, aggravated by global warming and high CO2 concentrations, have depleted the magnesium content in soils. Consequently, a decrease in the magnesium content in foods such as cereals, fruits, and vegetables has been reported in recent scientific studies (1)1. Cazzola R et al. Going to the roots of reduced magnesium dietary intake: A tradeoff between climate changes and sources. Heliyon. 2020 Nov 3;6(11):e05390..

The need to balance the calcium:magnesium ratio, which has been increased by changes in our diet, has also been related to factors contributing to metabolic syndrome such as hypertension, hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, and cardiac hypertrophy (2)2. Rosanoff A et al. Suboptimal magnesium status in the United States: are the health consequences underestimated? Nutr Rev. 2012 Mar;70(3):153-64..

WHY MAGNESIUM ACETYL TAURATE + MAGNESIUM BISGLYCINATE?

Magnesium Acetyl Taurate ATA® is the form of magnesium that most effectively increases magnesium levels in the brain. Compared to other salts, its high bioavailability requires a much lower dose to reach the brain (3)3. Ates M et al. Dose-Dependent Absorption Profile of Different Magnesium Compounds. Biol Trace Elem Res. 2019 Dec;192(2):244-251..

ALBION® magnesium bisglycinate, with its patented chelation system, is bonded to amino acids, making a highly available and stable form of magnesium. These magnesium and amino acid bonds are stronger, more stable, and survive longer in the bloodstream.

All this, together with the use of gastroresistant capsules, allows the compound to reach the intestinal area intact, where it is more effectively absorbed.

WHY THIS DOSAGE?

Unlike other products, our dose of 200mg/day does not exceed the tolerable upper intake level (UL) established by the EFSA for magnesium supplementation. Above which adverse effects may be observed.

A single, 200mg, dose (2 capsules of 100mg) has been observed to achieve higher levels of magnesium in the tissues than divided doses. Due to the fact that the daily use of magnesium is very fast, levels in the blood and soft tissues cannot increase sufficiently with divided doses (4)4. Uysal N et al. Timeline (Bioavailability) of Magnesium Compounds in Hours: Which Magnesium Compound Works Best? Biol Trace Elem Res. 2019 Jan;187(1):128-136..

45mg of this compound is in the form of Magnesium Acetyl Taurate. We chose this dosage as it has proven to significantly increase magnesium levels in brain tissue. Higher doses did not result in higher levels. In the form of acetyl taurate, higher values have been obtained than with doses of up to 400mg of other compounds (3)3. Ates M et al. Dose-Dependent Absorption Profile of Different Magnesium Compounds. Biol Trace Elem Res. 2019 Dec;192(2):244-251..

BENEFITS OF MAGNESIUM SUPPLEMENTATION

Magnesium is involved in a multitude of body system functions, so its adequate intake is associated with numerous benefits. The following are some of the health claims approved by the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) (55. EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, N. and A. (NDA). (2009). Scientific Opinion on the substantiation of health claims related to magnesium pursuant to Article 13(1) of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006. EFSA Journal, 7(10), 1216, 66.
