WHAT IS COLLAGEN?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, and is the chief constituent of skin, bones, ligaments, and tendons (1)1. Kadler KE et al. Collagen fibril formation. Biochem J. 1996 May 15;316 ( Pt 1)(Pt 1):1-11.. It provides structure and support to enable these tissues to be strong, durable, and flexible.

In muscle, bone, and connective tissue, type 1 collagen predominates, composed of amino acids such as glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine.

The body produces collagen, but as we age, this production decreases (2)2. Panwar P et al. Aging-associated modifications of collagen affect its degradation by matrix metalloproteinases. Matrix Biol. 2018 Jan;65:30-44.. Supplementation ensures that collagen-specific amino acids are available for collagen synthesis.

After exercise, plasma glycine levels decrease, possibly due to increased glycine utilization (3)3. Trommelen J et al. Casein Ingestion Does Not Increase Muscle Connective Tissue Protein Synthesis Rates. Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2020 Sep;52(9):1983-1991.. This suggests an increased need for this amino acid. Collagen may therefore be potentially beneficial in situations of high demand such as high training loads.

WHY THIS FORMAT?

Hydrolyzed collagen is a form of collagen that has undergone enzymatic hydrolysis to reduce its gelling properties to allow it to be easily mixed with water for ingestion (4)4. Vieira CP et al. Glycine improves biochemical and biomechanical properties following inflammation of the achilles tendon. Anat Rec (Hoboken). 2015 Mar;298(3):538-45.. This process is guaranteed by the Solugel® patent.

We also add vitamin C to our product, which is an important cofactor in collagen synthesis (5)5. Praet SFE et al. Oral Supplementation of Specific Collagen Peptides Combined with Calf-Strengthening Exercises Enhances Function and Reduces Pain in Achilles Tendinopathy Patients. Nutrients. 2019 Jan 2;11(1):76..

HOW TO USE COLLAGEN?

A 10g scoop allows for optimal collagen dosage according to the desired application. Our nutrition experts recommend the following doses based on recent scientific studies (6)6. AIS Sports Supplement Framework. Collagen. Australian Institute of Sport. 2021.:

1 scoop (10g/day):

– Helps control pain during inflammatory conditions such as tendonitis along with specific exercises.
– Helps reduce exercise-induced joint pain.
– Treatment/prevention of degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis.
– Helps strengthen bones in order to reduce the risk of fractures.
– Reduces skin ageing by reducing wrinkles and improving skin elasticity and hydration (7)7. de Miranda RB et al. Effects of hydrolyzed collagen supplementation on skin aging: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Int J Dermatol. 2021 Dec;60(12):1449-1461..

2 scoops (20g) 40-60 min prior to exercise:

– Supports collagen turnover in connective tissue during high training stimulus.
– Supports tissue integrity in athletes with previous connective tissue injuries.
– Supports repair of various tissues including bone, skin and ligaments/tendons during periods of rehabilitation.

BENEFITS OF COLLAGEN SUPPLEMENTATION

According to recent scientific studies, collagen supplementation presents important benefits, such as:

– Injury prevention and treatment: Collagen supplementation helps to amplify the stimulus provided by specific exercises as part of an injury prevention and treatment protocol (8)8. Close GL et al. Nutrition for the Prevention and Treatment of Injuries in Track and Field Athletes. Int J Sport Nutr Exerc Metab. 2019 Mar 1;29(2):189-197..
– Elderly athletes: Supplementation may be beneficial due to a natural decrease in collagen production that accompanies ageing (2)2. Panwar P et al. Aging-associated modifications of collagen affect its degradation by matrix metalloproteinases. Matrix Biol. 2018 Jan;65:30-44..
– Anti-ageing/aesthetics: Supplementation with hydrolyzed collagen shows favorable results in skin hydration, elasticity, and reduces wrinkling (7)7. de Miranda RB et al. Effects of hydrolyzed collagen supplementation on skin aging: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Int J Dermatol. 2021 Dec;60(12):1449-1461..
